I remember as a kid in Montreal (early 60s) when going downtown on a summer Sunday for "window shopping" was a big deal. Men in their suits, women in fancy dresses and hats. And the stores were all closed! There was something very genteel about the whole thing.
Like your photo, btw. Looks like NY had our weather on Easter. (We were in the city for brunch and a Broadway show.) When I was a teen, going into the City was a big deal, and we got all dressed up. Now, people dress as if they were going to a local dog park. In the Broadway theater, in the concert halls, even in the opera, people dress like they would if they were going to play softball in Central Park. I don't see that as a bad thing, but it does take some of the special feeling out of a trip to the City. I was vastly overdressed, as I was wearing a sports jacket, partly because we got on the train right after church, and partly because it was quite breezy, but mostly because I am old fashioned. In any event, It was a great day, and folks were enjoying themselves on Broadway, around Rockefeller Center, and in Bryant Park. Thanks for looking.
