The Easter Parade is still there, on 5th Avenue, and people stroll up and down all afternoon displaying colorful and unusual hats and outfits:
http://gonyc.about.com/cs/holidays/a/easter.htm It is not as big a deal as it once was, however, and we did not give even a thought of walking a few blocks to take a look. (We were in the city for brunch and a Broadway show.) When I was a teen, going into the City was a big deal, and we got all dressed up. Now, people dress as if they were going to a local dog park. In the Broadway theater, in the concert halls, even in the opera, people dress like they would if they were going to play softball in Central Park. I don't see that as a bad thing, but it does take some of the special feeling out of a trip to the City. I was vastly overdressed, as I was wearing a sports jacket, partly because we got on the train right after church, and partly because it was quite breezy, but mostly because I am old fashioned. In any event, It was a great day, and folks were enjoying themselves on Broadway, around Rockefeller Center, and in Bryant Park. Thanks for looking.
