Dave -

that's one of the interesting things I learned in the articles on
focusing systems.  Contrast-detection focusing has to hunt.  It works
by iteratively sending a  signal to the lens and measuring the
results.  It doesn't even know which way the lens is off the mark.  It
tries something, checks to see if the result is better, then tries
again.  Eventually it narrows in on the correct result.
