Mark,
I can't speak to your organization of files, but mine are by year and quarter.
Every year has 4 quarters.  Every quarter has multiple days of contributions.
The little triangles expand or contract the quarters and years.
I know this is mighty symplistic, but...
Each time I download from my camera's disk, a new day's folder (or
several days) are created.
My SOP is to move the folders, dragging them to become sub's of the quarter.
