I have had no problem with magic needles, ever. I put the cartridge in first, pull the leader over to the magic needle and stick it inbetween the needles. Then I advance once so that both rows of holes are over the take-up spokes, close the back, tension the film by turning the rewind knob and then advance at least one more time, usually two, checking that the rewind knob is rotating as I wind on. I'm right handed, but my right hand is always holding the camera, so the film is loaded with my left. Not that that is likely to have anything to do with the success of using magic needles...!
