it's an extraordinary building. I visited it about 20 years ago and took a tour around the upper reaches of the tours. I don't think I've ever been so scared in my life, walking along the ledges hundreds of feet above the ground. Gaudi's architecture is not really to my taste, but as you say, it's confident, and it really seems to come from the Catalan way of being. As for the whiteness of the stone, when the great European cathedrals were first built they were painted in bright colours that we would consider gaudy (geddit!?) nowadays. Back then of course ordinary people's lives were monochrome - the dull colours of dirty, undyed clothing, walls etc. so the churches and cathedrals must have been as much entertainment as they were worship.
