I haven't seen lag times like that.  The digital cameras I have
used are no worse than autofocus film SLR's, and  some are
better because there is no mirror that needs to flip up out of
the way in order to make an exposure.  Of course, I haven't used
all models of digital cameras, so you may have found one with a
one-second delay between shutter press and exposure.  Are you
sure you aren't measuring from shutter press until the image is
diplayed on the LCD viewing screen?  This usually includes the
time necessary to write the image to the media you are using but
the actual image capture is much faster than that.

I'd be interested in knowing which brand(s) of digital cameras
have a lag of a second before image capture.

I know that how you use an autofocus camera can make a large
difference in the lag time.  Perhaps you haven't found the best
technique yet.
