In addition, if you should be unlucky enough to damage the glass, replacing 
it is cheap; perhaps in the $50-100 area. Depending on lens - the large 
telephotos front element is of course an exception. If you have a few 
lenses it's cheaper to fix possible damages than buying protective filters.
