The vast majority of my communication with inanimate objects seems to

Yes and no. Places in the USA do re-cell, so costs after shipping and
such would mean I was in a stone's throw of new discount price anyway.
The battery has electronics in it that communicates with the charger,
and can tell you date of manufacture, serial number, learned capacity,
charged capacity, temperature and number of cycles.
