I'm a big fan of the hybrid rechargeables. The don't have the
supposed capacity of some of the straight NiMH, but they hold their

flashes or in my bag waiting to be used, the slow self discharge is
really nice.

Fry's used to sell Uniross Hybrio AA batteries $10 for four. At one
point they switched over to Rayovac hybrids which don't seem to have
the capacity. The eneloops seem better than the rayovacs, but not as
good as the uniross. When I was there the other day, they had a new
brand, but I didn't get any to try.

I've one set of Eneloops and one set of GP Recyko batteries. Their performance is basically equivalent. Ever since I got the Eneloops I've slowly phased out all other rechargeable batteries.

When I was shooting *istD, someone on the list (I think it was Rob Studdert) suggested the LaCrosse BC-900 charger
(http://www.amazon.com/Crosse-Technology-BC-9009-AlphaPower-Battery/dp/B00077AA5Q)

I bought it from Amazon and except the fact that the AA's and AAA's that they give were utter rubbish, the charger is outstanding and serves me well ever since (5 years or may be even more).

As for the batteries, today I am using them mostly for my Metz flash. They work really good. No complaints whatsoever. I remember before I got the Eneloops, I had two sets of NiMHs with all at all times. One in camera, another in the bag. And lots of recharging as per the rate of my shooting. My main gripe with the set up was that regular NiMH did not hold charge for too long... Eneloops and Recykos has lower capacity than GP NiMHs (2000 mAh vs 2700 mAh) but they hold the charge for much longer time which in my view makes the preferable.

YMMV.
