Hi Richard,
   a lot of macro photos were made with two flashes on arms on both
   sides of the camera. I think for many animals, this is even better
   than a ringflash (as a ringflash will get you much more decreasing
   light with distance, thus creating more tunnel effect).

   Try it - it's not that much expensive when you have a flash
   already. Just some cords, a second inexpensive flash (even 330 or
   240ftz will suffice for macro as second flash, I think, you don't
   need tilt/swivel).

   Also, put some neutral density over the 500ftz if it's too strong
   to quench fast enough. Metz makes nice plastic ND filters for their
   flashes, which could be adapted to 500ftz, or purchase ND gel
   filters from lighting supplier (these may not last that long,
   though).
