Yes, it can. You can even use "contrast control flash" with that setup. If it doesn't fire, check the contacts of the hot shoe, and also check a Pentax function (i don't remember the number, perhaps it is function 9) which prevents the RTF from firing if the lens is smaller than 35 mm.
