You can make a pretty nice 11 X 14 with a 3.25MP camera. I used a Canon D30
for a long weekend and was pleasantly surprised by the 8 X 10 and 11 X 14
prints that I could make using it. This was setting it at the lowest
sharpness, lowest contrast, and lowest color saturation settings and then
letting PhotoShop take care of the sharpening, if needed. I didn't run into
the need to adjust colors or contrast at all, though that's a matter of
taste, anyway. I hope Pentax releases at least a 4MP SLR body, because I
can make prints larger than 11 X 14 with my printer, but a $1200, 3.25MP
body would probably be enough to get me to buy it, if I could use all of my
Pentax lenses with it. Especially if it worked as well, or better than the
D30. The only thing that would make me hesitate would be the thought that,
shortly after a 3.25MP body is released, a 4 or 5MP body might quickly
follow.

I own a Fuji 6900z, which uses the second generation Super CCD. The 6900z
had a standard 3.1Mp CCD and give an interpolated image of just a bit over 6
Mp. However, I tend not to shoot in the 6Mp mode as for most of my shots,
there is no real advantage in quality that I can see. I rarely make
anything beyond an 8x10, so the 3Mp resolution is generally enough. The
advantage I see to using the 6Mp mode comes in when you need to crop and
enlarge a photo in Photoshop. I use Genuine Fractals and I've found the 6
Mp mode give GF plenty of data to work with when setting up a cropped and
enlarged shot. Beyond that, there is not much advantage to 6Mp...unless you
want to brag about your megapixels!!

Actually, most reviewers equate the resolution in the 6Mp mode to be
equivalent to about 4 to 4.5 Mp in quality....so you guessttimataion of 8 Mp
effective resolution is probably about on the mark.

PS -- One really nice thing I've found with Fuji's Super CCD is the colors
are pretty darned good.....most photos need very little color correction
work and many times are very good straight out of the camera. That's nice
if you want to print off a couple of quick shots from your media card at the
local digital kiosk.
