Hi Ryan, it's like comparing apples and oranges, these two lenses are much different optical constructions. The 85/1.8 Pentax is Gaussian construction featuring 6 elements, similar to a modern 1.4/50 lens. The Jupiter is a Sonnar type construction, derivative of Tessar, design from start of last century. What speaks for the Jupiter is that even designs 80-100 years old can be VERY sharp; if stopped down. The Pentax is supposed to be very sharp even just slightly stopped down. The Jupiter is nice portrait lens which is quite sharp at f/5.6-8, the Pentax is an all-round lens which is nice at 1.8 and sharp down on. For lots of work, the Jupiter suffices IMHO. At least it's VERY cheap. And it has REALLY good portrait properties! Good light, Frantisek Vlcek - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List.
