Thunderbird, (oh misspent youth, everytime I type that I think about
pear wine, and not a good one either), groups threads by references, but
not by subject. John Sessoms replies always break threads.

Contrary to statements made by others in these discussions, my
experience is that Gmail only groups messages into a thread based on
the subject, rather than using the In-Reply-To: and References:
headers.
(I do miss mutt's threaded tree view...)
