Yesterday I took my Vivitar 200/3 screwmount for my daily walk. Since I use it on a K mount body, the view was supposed to become dim at f/8 through f/16. Well, on that sunny day, it was so easy to see at f/11, I feared that something was wrong. There was nothing wrong; on a bright day, there simply was little penalty for using stop-down metering.
Indoors, where I use the lens to shoot school plays, I use the lens at f/3 to f/5.6, and again the view is plenty bright. The only time that stop-down metering would be too dim is indoors, with flash, at f/8 to f/22. Which makes the screwmount version of the 85/1.8 look more sensible all the time. To all of you who complain that Kevin Cameras' 85/1.8Ks are overpriced at $600, I say: Get a grip on reality. That's the going rate. Don't like it? Get the screwmount.
