Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) A very common butterfly, except.... it was possibly born in Northern Africa and flew to northern Europe over a few months in the spring. Laying eggs as far north as middle England/Denmark, the second cohort (probably this is one of those) will be born about now and make their way as far north as the Shetland Isles.
