I've had some strange situations with faulty readers. Typically computer readers not able to handle SDHC. What happens is that the first GB of images comes through allright, and the rest has partly garbled files, much like the example that BobW posted a while ago. If unaware of the problem it's very easy to suspect the card to be faulty. Once had a faulty SD card reader behaving the same way with SD cards too. However when popping the card back into the camera all the images were still there. Fortunately.
