This lens was quite legendary in its day. I own the Newseum's (http://www.newseum.org) book The Pulitzer Prize Photographs: Capture the Moment, a compendium of [all?] Pulitzer prize-winning photos from 1942 through 2000. It's amazing how many were taken by the Nikon 105/2.5 in its day. Incidentally, about half the photos were vertical shots.
When the book was introduced, the Newseum said it was going to print just 5,000 copies. I rushed to buy mine. Well, they're still selling it (http://giftshop.newseum.org/detail.asp?ProductID=52), and the price is only $19.95. I think I paid $29.95 or $34.95. A great "read," at times powerfully disturbing. I lent this book to everyone I could. One returned it visibly shaken.
