Look, there are real homeless people, I know that. However I've seen the local "work for food" crowd and know most of them. They are professionals. If you give them money, they're fine with that. If you actually offer them work, be prepaired for words you couldn't repeat in polite company. There are lots of kinds of homeless as well. In New Haven we have a woman called the "Shakespere Lady", she's Yale educated, got a full scholarship, but in some manner she's insane. When some former classmates found out she was on the streets, they set her up with doctors and med's and a free apartment. In less that 6 months she was back on the streets refusing to take her med's, not sleeping in her apartment, reciting Shakespear for handout's, (thus "Shakespear Lady"). I don't know weather to feel sorry for her or not... There are lots of stories, some are sad, some are scams. When you see a "homeless" begger put take off their ratty army surplus coat, and get into a late model car, (in better condition than I can afford), to drive home, it kind of makes you suspect the next panhandler isn't quite what they pretend to be.
