What you didn't mention was that the 540 head also rotates about 300
degrees, so you could still point it UP to the ceiling when you turn
the body vertical.
Something I tried was ordering a couple of different "Pop-up flash
diffusers" off of eBay. They're only about $7 to $9, from China, took
about four days to arrive. They're like a soft-box for the pop-up
flash, and they work quite well in situations where you don't need the
power of one of the hot shoe units. Fold flat, so they take up no
room. Fit in your pants pocket if you don't sit down on them.
When I've used them I think they pretty much eliminate any hot spots
on oily skin or shiny metal.

Yes, the 540 flash head turns for vertical. Of course you can't use
the built in bounce card in that position. But with the Lightsphere
it's perfect. Since the sphere is round, I keep the head rotated 90
degrees for all shots, horizontal and vertical. When switching to
vertical, it's just a matter of flipping it up.
