I wonder if these objects are Venus and Jupiter. They are reasonably
close together at present and can be very bright.
Jupiter sets first leaving Venus, the brighter one, alone and very low
on the horizon, much like your second image.
Not an expert on these things, though.......

Could be. May be. I've never ever seen Venus so BIG and so BRIGHT before,
though. Wonder why it is now?
It's possibly on the far side of the sun, and we're seeing almost the
full face illuminated.
Still going to try to get a better pic. (Help, anyone have advice about
that?)
Good solid tripod and mirror lockup. With the K10D the 2 second timer
provides that. The mirror flips up and there's a delay before the
shutter releases to allow the camera to settle down again.
