Happens all the time.
Many years ago, a book salesman and VP went to call on a K-Mart (like) buyer.
They were selling children's books and stopped to straighten the
instore display.
The store manager and buyer passed by as they worked on the shelves.
The VP engaged the buyer in a conversation...
"That competitor's shelf space sure looks a little stale.
Those books aren't moving too well are they."
It was total bull, but designed to spread fear and doubt about the competitor.
The distribution VP (who was along on the trip) smiled at the wiley
sales VP's gambit.
