Thanks - that's an interesting comment. I arrived in Fez at about 10pm
having not eaten or drunk since 7am, after a 9-hour train ride that
was held up for a couple of hours by a flash flood. I was then driven
in a rickety taxi blaring out Arabic music, and dumped at the main
entrance to the Medina, and it was exactly like the experience you see
depicted so often in movies, of the hapless Westerner lost in the
teeming throng. I've been to far more remote and strange places, but
not that was quite so disorienting at first. It quickly became
apparent that I had fallen among good people though.

Architecturally the place is very much on the lines of Ali Baba, but
it is crumbling and falling apart. As a World Heritage Site it
receives a lot of money from UNESCO for restoration, and there is a
lot of restoration going on. The worry is that the restoration removes
the soul of the place and just leaves a clean, Disneyfied version.
It's a difficult balance to maintain.

Bob
