David - There is a lot of info in the previous replies and I'm not sure what I have to add helps, but this is on a slightly different topic. I'm only bringing this up because you mentioned shots looking sharp in other editors, but not looking sharp in photoshop.
In photoshop versions before CS4, the did not completely render the image at every magnification. My memory is a little fuzzy, (no pun intended) but sharpness can only be evaluated at 25, 50 and 100% magnification. I don't have my documentation at hand, but it might be worth checking out if that has something to do with your problem. Other levels of zoom, like 33 or 66 percent aren't redrawn from the original file contents, but redrawn from whatever may be held in memory. I"m not sure about magnification above 100%. Like I said, I'm not sure if this has anything to do with your problem, but it's possible.
