That's part of it, yah, and probably a big part. Still, even
though I'm flipping bits instead of burning film, when I blast
five shots off chasing a chimney swift across the sky, there
is a voice in the back of my head saying, "five more frames to
_edit_ tonight" (at least to go through and see whether I got
anything with feathers and not just clouds, and came anywhere
near being in focus).
At least macro doesn't rack up as high a frame count ...

That makes sense. And I do expect/hope to keep the compose-and-decide
thing in my style even as I feel more freedom to snap off a couple of
"hey that looks kind of interesting" shots at targets of opportunity
because "they don't cost me anything".
At the moment this birds-in-flight skill I'm trying to develop is
something I'm really glad I have both instant feedback and the ability
to delete quickly and recover resources for. Even if I want to shoot
the critters on film later, digital seems the only (current) sane
way to practice.
I'm certainly feeling much less resistance than usual to the urge
to photograph my cat every time she does anything especially cute
or generally, uh, feline. ;-)
It will be interesting to see how my habits change again once I
start taking the DSLR for granted.
