Margaret, How's the balance of the pack. I don't hike that much, but when I do, I usually put my photo bag inside my LoweAlpine pack. This is a mountaineering pack. There are lot of attachment and I can strap my tripod vertically on the side. It seems to be working ok for me.
The problem with strapping the tripod horizontally (my assumption from your description) is that it is usually in the way, especially on a narrow path.
