If it works anything like Nikon's Active D-Lighting and Sony's DRO, it is a mild underexposure and a custom curve that brings up shadow and mid-tone detail. So far, Sony seems to have the best implementation of this sort of thing as they offer configurable amounts along with an intelligent mode that picks what it thinks is the correct option, Nikon's is pretty much the same as Pentax's. The only real Dynamoic Range extension tech is Fujifilm's dual-sensor site SuperCCD sensors. -- M.
