That was my thought when I first bought this lens, shouldn't it be a variable aperture lens? The newer ones seem nicer in finish, especially the 28-80 AT-X, but this is a nicely speced lens....optical quality does not appear to be compromised in any version of this lens. I've been happy with the lens, but just do not seem to use it enough. I seem to favor my FA28-105 or the 28-70/4 over this lens. Plus, I want a new digital camera, so I've decided to try to get rid of some my 35mm gear I just no longer seem to use....plus that way it also keeps peace with the wife too....look, I'm buying this digicam with proceeds from my 35mm gear....LOL
