Dave,
It's a great idea.  Lots of my lenses live and travel that way.
I'm on constant lookout for those soft rubber beer can holders.
Put your lens in one of those and it becomes indestructible!
No need to cut it down, just wrap a rubber band around over the top.
My FA50/1.4 has made several trips to meet Mr. Floor without incident.
And they cost only $1 at the supermarket.
