There have been some problems with manufacturing defects. I've only  
heard one report of problems with infinity focus, and that my have  
been camera related. The most common defect is an uneven focus plane.  
That's easily tested for and recognized. I think that Pentax has  
probably resolved that situation by now, and I doubt that it will  
continue to recur. My first sample was defective, but it was  
immediately replaced. The lens I have now is very good. I'm using it  
with the K20D nearly every way, and I'm very pleased with the  
results. (See the Peso titled "Pipeline" that I posted last night.)   
I wouldn't hesitate to buy the DA* 16-50. It's an excellent lens.
