Thanks for this, Peter. I've been wondering what our rights are as well. 
Not exactly the same as in the US or UK, but the officiousness of _some_ 
officials is universal. I've been harrassed by a Cityrail employee (got 
an email apology from a senior manager), a Darling Harbour security 
guard, whom I subsequently charmed by a detailed discussion of the 
history of Mamiyaflexes, and on the forecourt of the Opera House, of all 
places, where cameras are everywhere. The lens was a little longer 
(A*300), but no tripod. Hrumpf.
