I'm looking for a new compact digital camera for my wife, for her
birthday and our next trip.

I have always preferred SLRs, and currently use my *ist D most of the
time. I bought an Optio S twhen it first came out, and I keep in my
briefcase or wear one my belt when I don't want to lug my camera bag.
That's what my wife is using now, since her camera is broken, but she
doesn't take as many photos with it as when she had one of her own.

She has had three digitals over the last 10 years or so, first a
Casio, then an Olympus, and finally, for the past several years, a
Nikon Coolpix 775. She really liked the Nikon, and wants something
like it if possible, but Nikon has gone in another direction with
their compacts.

What she is looking for is a small, durable compact that is easy to
operate and to download photos from. She never shoots at high
resolution, so she doesn't need a camera with a high mega-pixel
capability. She does need something with a good optical zoom, and
strongly prefers an optical view finder in addition to the usual video
screen.

If anyone has a camera they can recommend, I would be grateful. TIA
