That was a great story -- congratulations! I'm curious as to why that astronomer is also working in the photo lab where you get your slides developed, but that's probably a good story in itself. You mentioned that this fellow offered to make available to you a solar filter. Do you know if this is a metallized glass or polymer filter that simply acts as a broadband (UV-VIS-IR) ND6 neutral density filter, or is it the more exotic narrow-bandpass H-alpha filter? If it's the more exotic one, you may very well be able to capture solar flares and prominences on the right emulsion (e.g., Technical Pan 2415). Now ~those~ would be some spectacular solar shots! Please keep us all updated on the details. I expect we may be seeing some of your work in the Gallery section of an upcoming issue of Sky & Telescope.
