While it may appear that there is only a nominal difference between 
 wide angle lenses, the angle of view is significantly different than 
for the same difference if focal lengths at the longer end.   For 
instance there is a 13 mm difference between a 15 mm lens and a 28 mm 
lens, and the angle of view is 111 to 75 degrees respectively;  a 
difference of 36 degrees.  Yet the 27 mm difference (close to 2X) 
 between a 50 mm and 77 mm lens offers only a 16 degree difference in 
the angle of view.   That is 47 degrees for the 50 mm and 31 degrees for 
the 77 mm.  So if you look at the difference in terms of angle of view, 
there is not such a large jump in the coverage.

And actually there are some lenses between 55  and 77.  Nikon makes a 
nice 60 mm macro lens.   My suggestion is get a good 28 - 70 f2.8.... a 
most useful range and my standard lens.
