The other thing you can do is make this a whole new picture. Create the 
layer as described above and save the layer as a PSD file. Name it 
something like "oval-mask.psd". Then whenever you need it, just open it 
copy the layer and paste it as a layer into any portrait.

If you want to get fancy, you can have a "white-oval-mask", 
"50percent-grey-oval-mask", ...
