I did some product shots for the web about three months ago
using my boss's Sony Mavica (the one with the 10x zoom lens).
I covered up the built-in flash and used it to trigger my strobes
for some decent lighting.
Check them out: http://www.wtsi.ca/product.html
The 8 thumbnails, and the shots that they link to were all
done with the Mavica. Oh, and excuse the "non-finished" web
page, I don't do the administration on it..... If it's anything like
mine, which hasn't been updated in close to a year.....
They turned out quite good for web shots. Some of the colors
were a bit wierd, as I was shooting on a white background and
there are definitely shades of magenta and some other odd color
shifts in there. Photoshop use was kept to an absolute minimum,
and was only used to cover up some minor blemishes in the stand
on the pic of the Sony Camera.
Digital is a fabulous medium for web-only or for proofing. Being
that the Mavica is only about a 1 Mega-Pixel camera, the quality
is not near what you could expect from a newer 3 or 4 M-Pix Cam.
My personal experience is that while these shots turned out quite
well, using proper transparency film I could get excellent prints
at 11 x 14 + for advertisement from 35mm, and WAAY cool
poster sizes from larger (like 6 x 7). I think Digital has a
long way to go before I will consider using it for a replacement
even for 35mm.
The boss, BTW, now uses the Mavica almost exclusively. He
used to own Contax Cameras.... Hmmm.....
