You could also try putting several lights at, say 1/4 or 1/8 or 1/16
power around it, then one at full power from the direction you think
most likely. Maybe put some sort of light-colored filter on all but the
primary. And try it with and without the polarizer. I'm guessing that
the polarizer might "quiet down" some of the intense highlights from
multiple light sources.
