That's what I do on my PC running Windows 2000! The only time you need to go the "safely remove hardware" process is when removing the *card reader* from the machine. If you just yank the card reader, you get a message saying, in effect, "Don't do that again" (whereas with Macs I've done this on you get a complete lockup requiring reboot). Since my card reader is a front panel mount type built in to the computer, I don't ever need to remove it from the system :)
