There really wasn't any detail to get. Wonderfully unphotogenic white
overcast sky. I did blow out some of the sky (right along the mountain)
in the conversion when I increased the contrast, but even not blown out
there was no detail and only a hint of texture to the clouds.

Yep. On my monitor there is no detail in the clouds, as in featureless.
