A short while back I asked about this lens on the list. I got a
couple of replies that indicated it was mediocre at best. Well I
received it from the seller on ebay a couple of days ago. It had
quite a bit of dirt inside the lens, so I inquired if I could
return it. While waiting to hear back I gave it the brick wall
test just to see.
This lens is superb at all apertures including 2.0. There is
about a stop or fall off at 2.0, a half stop at 2.8, and barely
discernible fall off at 4.0. Distortion is minimal at all
apertures, maybe 1, 2% of barrel distortion. The fall off and
distortion are to be expected with a 24mm lens, so are not a
problem to me. Every slide was razor sharp under a 10x loupe. I
decided to keep it of course.
Now, for a question, I am almost afraid to have it cleaned in
fear that it will not come back as exceptional as it went in,
any one know if that is an idle worry, or could the spacing be
got off by a good tech taking it apart and putting it back
together?
I checked out my other lenses on the same roll of slide film. I
seem to be lucky with lenses because they are all pretty good,
even the Sigma 35-70/3.5-4.5 econo zoom, with one exception. The
exception? The SMC Pentax M 50/1.4. At 1.4 the image is overall
blurry. It is sharp at 2.0 and smaller. Very strange.
