After several lengthy talks with the folks in Redmond re: WIN9x
"supposedly" any old number will do.... even a made up one.
But everyone knows that totaly formating a HD (& even writing zeroes to
the drive) does NOT erase the data in the boot sector... wich seems to
contain prior info about you ("registered to" data & etc).
[I've even used the "Military grade" software to frag a drive].
I've had this data "reappear" even after repartitioning that included
deleting the primary logical DOS section.
The answer is: flip a coin & try the number given by another list
member. Then fire off an e-mail to the guys that swear by Linux. <g>
