I believe it is just the effect of a 'softer' development - according to
Langford, diluted developers will never produce the maximum contrast - ergo,
less obvious grain, as the edge contrast is reduced.

My W98 CD (for new PC's) does not have a serial number: you may not need one if
the CD you have is for this version.
If you need the upgrade version, I have this which I no longer need, so it's
probably Ok to give it to you: try

However, the installation program may try to validate this against data stored
on the CD, so it may not work!
