I haven't seen such problems, although I've never paid close attention.
I believe once I've gone with at least 2.5 GB of RAW and JPEG
images (more than 200 images) on a single charge within one
evening, and the NiHMs were not exhausted yet.

On several other occasions, I've done definitely
well over 100 images (RAW) within
one day without any worries for the batteries.
(I didn't or almost didn't used the built-in flash in those cases).
One set of my NiMHs is 2500 mAh and just about 6 months old.
The other two are, IIRC, 2000-2100 and 2300, and ~2years old.

The only instance where I had to change the batteries while shooting
was when I was using the built-in flash for (almost) every shot
(as a trigger for an external one).

In your case, could it be a faulty instance of a DS?

I've been using the *ist-Ds while my D needs repair and it seems to me
that the Ds sucks down batteries much faster the the D ever did. Anyone
else have any comparable experience. As an example, I could put a set of
2500 mah NiHMs into my D and go for a week of light use or several hundred
exposures before having to worry about running out of power. With the Ds
I'm lucky to go a day, and couple of hundred, more likely less than a
hundred exposures before switching batteries. The batteries are about a
year old, but they are the same ones I was using in the D which was still
working well with them before I stopped using it. Just curious about
anyone else's experience.
