Actually, I personally believe the use of a tripod is a great idea in some
cases, and not in others.  Great for portraits, hyperfocal distance scenic
shots, critical focusing jobs. As well as a support for big honking lenses.
Not so great for technical or photojournalism.  And of course, usually
totally needless for snapshots.
I once had a great Tiltall, which I was madly in love with.  I currently use
my girlfriend's Stilz (sp?), which I don't like much at all. Doesn't move as
fluidly, and not nearly so well constructed.  I think, therefore, it's also
a matter of finding a pod that you can work with...just my 2 cents worth,
adjusted for inflation and the current exchange rate.
