In the good, old days most zoom lenses were catering for both pros' and tyros' needs;
the latter wanted to use the same lenses as pros did. Nowadays there is a clear
startification of zoom lenses: those designed for pros are faster but with limited
focal length range. However, please acknowledge the fact that in the times of the SMC
A
35-105 there was no 28-70mm lens with constant aperture of f/2,8 like it is today. The
SMC A 24-90mm zoom lens is an ambitious design for advanced amateurs and to keep the
lens' quality high it has to be slower and with variable aperture. It is easier to
make
a good 35-105 lens than one which goes down to 24mm. To give you an axample: both
Nikon
and Minoolta made excellent zoom lenes in 35-200 range but design that went down to 28
(28-200) were inferior. Therefore, you are invited to enjoy the high quality 24-90mm
Pentax lens with relatively slow apertures - they cannot do it otherwise

Greetings

Jarek
