For the same reason you'd want one on a TV camera.  If you're following
an action sequence, waiting for the decisive moment, you'll track the
framing by using the zoom.  With the slowest powered zoom speed, you may
well have more accurate fine control than you get by zooming manually.

I think there are also settings whereby the camera zooms the lens to keep a moving object the same size.
