I am going to throw a caveat on this statement.
The presumption being made is that the lens is either being stopped down, metering is done and then the shot is made without opening the aperture back up, or that the lens will stop down to precisely the same point when the picture is taken, in the case of metering such as what must be done with the istD and a non A lens.
If you stop down meter, then open the lens up for final composition and then take the picture, there may well be a variance in the aperture size between metering and exposure.
