Yeah, the barrel that holds the fixed rear glass element, is plastic.

I expect that non-essential parts may be made of high grade plastic. I doubt everything on any lens is made entirely of
metal these days. For most purposes the plastic in that location is superior than metal for the purpose. Maybe more expensive,
though probably not.
