It wasn't the DG- just the EX DF (the first incarnation wasn't DF, i.e. no
focus 'clutch'- think those float about the used market quite often..) Have
they released the DG 28-70 2.8 already? Guess I haven't been keeping up to
date.  When I purchased mine 3 years ago, it was just before the 24-70 2.8
came out. The 24-70's supposed to have better glass (the 28-70's got 2
aspherical elements while the 24-70's got 2 or 3 aspherical elements and 2
or 3 low dispersion elements), however the 24-70's got an rather large 82mm
filter thread (as opposed to a 77mm)..

Hmm I thought you might be buying it for a film body because it was a 28-70.
I found it a bit frustrating to have lost the 28mm on the ist D. Did you
consider using some of the funds from your recent gear sales to top up and
get a DA 16-45 f4 instead?
